DEFINITION: Suspension refers to temporary exclusion from school as an outcome of student violation of a school code or rule. Each school has a grievance procedure. |
PREVENTION: Identify and intervene with students "at-risk" of being suspended or expelled; Encourage at risk students to participate in school and extra-curricular activities which are positive and self-motivation; Participate in the development and implementation of school board discipline policies; Provide and support a school climate that promotes positive attitudes and behaviors; Assist in the development of alternatives to suspension, e.g., behavior contracts, in-school codes and rules for behavior, clarify school board policies and procedures with students, parents and school personnel. |
CRISIS: Document incident and notify Parent/Guardian. Advise students and parents on student's rights, responsibilities and due process. Advise student and parent on school board policies, procedures and alternatives to out-of-school suspensions. |
INTERVENTION: Consider student learning and adjustment difficulties; Consider student's personal and interpersonal skills; Consider the need for comprehensive individual student programs/plans which focus on learning specific behaviors which are more compatible with school rules and codes/suggest special class programs to accommodate student aptitudes and interests. |
