| SUICIDE PREVENTION Code: MENTAL HEALTH - 306 |
DEFINITION: Students experiencing acute or chronic feelings of hopelessness and depression with recurring thoughts of their own death. |
PREVENTION: Implement staff inservice to recognize symptoms or signs of students with suicidal thoughts; Recognize abuse and neglect incidences and other chronic stress factors in a student's life experiences through early identification and refer to Protective Services. Pay close attention to explore student's feelings and emotional needs. |
CRISIS: Assess degree of risk of identified student and provide support; Activate Building Crisis Team to provide needed emergency and medical attention; Arrange for transportation to hospital if required; Contact parents/guardian and provide support and information as required; Consult with school personnel regarding appropriate response to the incidents. |
INTERVENTION: Encourage ongoing family centered counseling and mental health treatment as appropriate. |
