DEFINITION: Negative feelings students have about themselves as manifested by such characteristics as being fearful and timid, bullying and bragging, indecisive, expecting failure, and reluctance to express opinions or problems. |
PREVENTION: Implement school programs to enable students to have positive experiences at all levels; Consult with parent groups and school staff regarding techniques for identifying, building and maintaining positive self-esteem; Make recommendations to incorporate affective needs of students as an integral part of the total academic curriculum. |
CRISIS: Assess causative factors for student's' behavior; Provide immediate resources to help student feel better about self; Intervene and follow-up with parents, school staff and significant others who have an impact on the child: Provide referral information to medical or mental health resources as appropriate. |
INTERVENTION: Implement and facilitate the development of school environments that promote opportunities for students to experience self-confidence and success; Initiate positive self-esteem building programs at the preschool/kindergarten, elementary, middle school and high school levels. |
