| OUTPATIENT THERAPY FOR YOUTH ABUSING DRUGS, ALCOHOL, & OTHER HARMFUL SUBSTANCES Code: SUBSTANCE ABUSE - 400 |
DEFINITION: This refers to youth either "at-risk" of abusing drugs or alcohol because of situations that they are in, or the youth that are abusing drugs, alcohol, or mood altering substances. |
PREVENTION: Implement a comprehensive K-12 drug prevention curriculum, which teaches inappropriate drug use as harmful and which supports and strengthens resistance to substance abuse; Provide family-life and parenting skills education; Develop procedures to assess and monitor the extent and type of substance abuse among students; Establish clear and specific rules regarding substance abuse that include corrective treatment measures; Collaborate with community and parent groups in making the schools anti-drug policy and program work. |
CRISIS: Utilize and support the school policy for corrective treatment action; Ascertain if medical services are required and arrange transportation if needed; Contact and provide appropriate support to parent or guardian; Advise parent/student of treatment options. |
INTERVENTION: Provide in-school treatment to student and the family when appropriate; Coordinate treatment services with outside agency where indicated; Provide school personnel with appropriate information. |
