STUDENTS FROM DIVORCED OR SEPARATED FAMILIES      Code:  MENTAL HEALTH - 304
DEFINITION:
Any student whose parents are divorced or separated; any experiencing distress due to changes to transition in the home.
PREVENTION:
Identify population form student voluntary self-referrals from teachers or other staff; Refer students to self-help groups, peer counseling groups, community support groups, community church groups; Develop school staff awareness of available programs and resources; Develop systematic training for school staff to become more aware of kinds of behavior symptomatic of students who are troubled because of divorce or separation situations.
CRISIS:
Note evidence of behaviors that indicate sudden behavioral changes, such as social withdrawal, depression, mood swings, drop in school achievement and performance, hostile or aggressive behavior; Counsel students relative to understanding and coping with stress and anxiety.
INTERVENTION:
Provide student assistance programs with student support services teams; Engage student support services team strategies; Implement school-based support services programs with parent approved curriculum and strategies.
