CULTURALLY AND/OR SOCIALLY ISOLATED                        Code:  MENTAL HEALTH - 300
DEFINITION:
Difficulties in functioning in a school environment due to language, racial, economic or social-cultural barriers.
PREVENTION:
Develop staff inservice focusing on culturally diverse student populations, including bi-cultural, bilingual, race, religion, and ethnicity; Identify students from migrant, bilingual and low socioeconomic families for additional student services; Establish procedures for on-going programs which address needs of students who feel culturally or socially isolated.
CRISIS:
Provide support services to decrease anxiety and stress resulting from discrimination, acts of bigotry; Arrange for different student placement in classroom.
INTERVENTION:
Conduct support group sessions with students who feel they are discriminated against because of their ethnicity or economic situation with other students; Support school district's efforts to maintain ethnically diverse staff; Conduct group sessions with student "antagonists" to increase understanding of diverse student populations.
