 CHRONIC ILLNESS                                                                                                                                Code:  HEALTH-204
 DEFINITION:
A condition of illness or modified health status of a recurrent or nature, which is not necessarily communicable.
 PREVENTION:
Provide educational experiences in the early grades which reinforce good health habits; Develop a plan with school officials and identify personnel to meet crisis situation; Provide a program for early detection and referrals to minimize reduced health status; Help students to accept the challenge of their health impairment; Seek means to provide the least restrictive environment for students; Sensitize and educate students and school personnel about handicapping conditions.
 CRISIS:
Identify crisis health condition; call designated personnel, when possible; Provide for the immediate resolution of the crisis and referral to medical care, according to local boards policies; Notify appreciate parents, guardian or physician.
 INTERVENTION:
Advise teachers of pertinent information relative to student's health, educational status and needs; Arrange for parent support groups and respite care where appropriate; Provide family and sibling counseling; Focus on mental health rather than illness; Assist the student in taking responsibly for appropriate self-care.
