| A.I.D.S., H.I.V. INFECTION Code: Health-201 |
DEFINITION: Condition in which the immune system is deficient and in which virus transmission occurs by risk behaviors or sexual intercourse, intravenous drug abuse, prior blood transfusion, or from an A.I.D.S. infected birth mother. |
PREVENTION: Promote the school board comprehensive A.I.D.S. school policy; Encourage sexual abstinence in the teen population; Encourage drug abuse prevention programs; Promote school board approved sex education classes which include the use of condoms as a means of disease prevention; Provide information to staff and community regarding disease transmission; Make available board approved pamphlets and brochures on A.I.D.S. |
CRISIS: Engage school policy on A.I.D.S.; Participate in decisions about school placement for student and as appropriate for staff members; Interpret affected individual's status and necessary precautions to appropriate staff, family and community members when authorized; Maintain student's or staff member's right to confidentiality. |
INTERVENTION: Enforce established school board policy; Counsel affected student and classmates, staff and community as appropriate to ensure educational rights and opportunities; Support educational continuity during medically related absences. |
