DEFINITION: Students with academic skill levels below grade or class expectations over an extended period of time; Students who learn differently from than most students. |
PREVENTION: Provide readiness experiences for preschool children; Provide early intervention & consultation services regarding learning or adjustment difficulties; Develop approaches to improve learning or adjustment difficulties; Implement programs which will enhance positive homework routines and school attitudes; Implement activities which will help students develop positive self-perception and aspirations; Assist teachers in meeting individual student needs, learning rates and styles; Implement & promote programs to facilitate cross-age, peer, parent & volunteer tutors; Screen for vision, hearing, or medical problems, make referrals and assist with appropriate follow-up.

CRISIS: Review intervention strategies and explore alternatives to meet the student's educational or social needs; Provide teachers, parents and students with consultation regarding the advisability of alternate school programs including special education; Suggest appropriate school/home/community intervention alterative to drop-out or failure. |
INTERVENTION: Modify general education activities to meet student needs, facilitate programs for peer, cross-age, volunteer or parent tutoring; Arrange for students to participate in compensatory, alternative, special education or vocational education programs; Recommend collaborative activities which enhance student achievement through parent-teacher interventions. |
