 ABSENTEEISM                                                                                       Code:  Education-100
 DEFINITION:
Absenteeism refers to absence from school in violation of school rules.  Michigan law (MSA - 15.4156) requires that every person having charge of a child from age 6-16 shall send that child to the public schools during the entire school year.  The child's attendance shall be continuous and consecutive.
 PREVENTION:
Identify students at-risk for chronic absenteeism and truancy; Assess reasons for chronic absenteeism; Involve and support parents to encourage regular school attendance; Explain standards and rules for attendance and clarify school board policies and procedures to students and parents; Promote student attitudes which will increase school attendance; Assist in the development of alternatives to suspension; Promote development of appropriate school policies.  (See student Code of Conduct.)
 CRISIS:
Support established attendance procedure; Support alternatives to out of school suspensions; Evaluate education, health, and family issues contributing to absenteeism.
 INTERVENTION:
Evaluate health, student learning, and adjustments; Develop individual intervention plans with student and parent; Advocate for appropriate student placement according to learning styles and other needs.
